my fave green a.m. smoothie

Another green smoothie? Like the interwebs need one. But I promise you this is a keeper. Growing up, St.Patrick's Day meant not only wearing green, but consuming green. My sister would dye the whole gallon of milk spring green and we'd bake a green cake by mixing blue and yellow food dye. I may have come a long way from artificially dyed  foods, but I still love to celebrate the color green every March 17th.

That's why I'm breaking out my favorite green smoothie for you. I've made my fair share of green drinks, from neon green quasi-juices that tastelike a sweet-tart to sludge green concoctions and that taste like a chocolate shake. But this one—this one is a beautiful pastel green that has the freshest flavor and is soothing on the stomach. It's perfect for any time of day, but I especially love it in the morning to jumpstart the metabolism and to get a healthy does of skin foods in before I jump into the day ahead. I love it because it's got clean zing from lemon and ginger, a boost of iron from spinach, slight sweet creaminess from pear and banana, and extra satiety from rich avocado. I often make my own almond milk as the liquid base because I love the slight floral flavor of it, but I've used store-bought with much success. Like all recipes here, make it work for you.

spinach  |  iron: aids in circulation | vitamin C: aids in collagen production to boost skin suppleness | vitamin K: reduces inflammation, improves blood circulation, and boosts complexion

avocado  |  monounsaturated fat (oleic acid): reduces inflammation  |  fiber: regulates digestive health  |  vitamin E (antioxidant): prevents premature aging   |  folate: aids in cell repair  |  carotenoids: reduce inflammation and prevent premature aging

banana  |  potassium: boosts circulation to aid in delivery of nutrients to skin|  vitamin A: helps repair dull and damaged skin  |  vitamin B12: boosts red blood cell formation thus aids in healthy skin and nails

ginger  |  antioxidants: prevent premature aging by reducing inflammation |  ginger (phytochemical): prevents breakdown of elastin

My Fave Green A.M. Smoothie
serves 1

1/2 ripe banana
1/2 small pear, like a Bosc pear, seeds removed
1/3 avocado, flesh removed
1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup frozen spinach
Juice of half a lemon (add a little of the zest for extra zing!)
3/4- inch piece of fresh ginger, roughly chopped
1/2 cup ice of more, depending on temperature desired*

Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Get glowing!

*You may chop the banana, pear, and avocado into smaller pieces and freeze in portions. If so, you may not need any ice.
